I recently reported that BadoinkVR has become the third VR site to offer augmented reality porn. Although at the moment there is only a free demo of one girl, it’s an encouraging sign that perhaps AR porn is finally about to take off. Badoink had first teased the prospect of AR girls several years ago. However, it was rival VR sites Naughty America VR, and VR Conk (AR Conk) who were the first pay sites to offer adult AR content. Both of these sites launched augmented reality porn for paying members as long ago as 2018. In neither case has progress been rapid, and in fact, in the case of ARConk non-existent (it’s app is now also sold at VRBangers, but it’s still the same one uncanny valley avatar girl in 5 different sexual poses).
Aside from these three sites, there are only a handful of patreon projects and demos, none of which really seem to be making much progress either. There is also MyARGirls, although that isn’t even in 3D – the girls are 2D cut outs that you can put in front of your real world view, but not move around. You can view an early ranking list of the handful of current AR porn sites here.
Despite the small number of sites trying to develop AR porn, there is good reason to believe the industry will now begin to grow. I personally believe it is going to become bigger than VR porn, and perhaps even as soon as the next 2 or 3 years.
What’s Holding AR Porn Back In 2021?
The thing holding back AR porn is the fact that it’s much harder to create than VR content (which itself is more difficult and costly than regular porn), and also because there are far fewer AR headsets around at the moment. Having said that, with AR now being an integral feature of most new smartphones, millions of people already now have the capability of at least trying AR porn. Viewing AR girls using your smartphone is pretty neat – but holding your phone up for more than a minute or so is tiresome. Until mobile AR headsets and AR glasses become more widely used, then the market for AR porn is likely to be much smaller than VR. Of course, AR porn may fuel the sale of such AR gadgets, especially given it is becoming increasingly easy to try out on your phone now.
Apple are strongly rumoured to be releasing an AR product by 2023 at the latest, with one insider claiming just this week that either a headset or glasses will arrive as early as this year. Such a release could almost immediately open the floodgates to a huge AR porn market, with at least two established VR porn sites ready to serve it.
In the meantime, virtual AR girls on your phone alone may be enough to create a sizeable fan base. After all, virtual desktop strippers (on your PC) have been around and popular since the early days of the internet. With a smartphone or tablet placed upright on your desk or table, you can now have a virtual stripper on your (literal) desktop.
Volumetric Capture For AR Porn Production
The AR girls of Naughty America, Badoink and AR Conk, were all captured in 3D by means of the fast developing technology of volumetric video. The fact that Naughty America’s AR girls are mightily more convincing than AR Conk’s, and Badoink’s arguably still more realistic, does suggest that the ability to capture realistic 3D holographic girls through these means is improving. Previous Patreon attempts at AR porn, and indeed Naughty America’s initial efforts, had relied on cgi animation of photographs of models, but the resulting digital avatars appeared far more crude the current crop of volumetric or ‘hologram’ pornstars.
The technique of capturing 3D data from multiple 2D photographs shot at different angles, is known as photogrammetry, and is considered a form of volumetric capture – at least I guess if it is sophisticated enough and captures enough data to create a realistic 3D model. The Patreon project ‘Holodexxx‘ is still using this technique, and the results are much more convincing than any previous attempts, although they are being used currently soley for VR sex games, rather than augmented reality. I should also point out that I haven’t looked at their work in VR, so I can’t vouch as to whether they are truly in 3D. However, even the results below are enough to convince me, at least, that the line between live recorded porn and digital avatars is going to become increasingly blurred.
Digital 3D Avatars Are Still The Future Of Both VR And AR Porn
The advantage of a digital avatar, by whichever of the various volumetric recording techniques it is captured, is of course that it can be animated to move and behave in different ways, and the viewer – whether in VR or AR – can interact with the avatar. The possibilities are therefore endless. Imagine having an AR girl in your bedroom whom you could instruct to spread her legs, or to take off her top, or even ‘touch’ her breasts using haptic gloves? This is of course impossible with strictly live volumetric recorded girls, unless they are turned into avatars. Thus although volumetric live action is currently the technique of choice, when digital avatars can be realistic enough to overcome the uncanny valley – likely very soon – then both VR and AR porn 2.0 will truly be here.
Another development which would see adult uses of augmented reality explode is live AR cam girls. This may be some way off, but the ingredients for it to happen – such as 5G and faster processing speeds – are rapidly coming into play. I believe we may see the first ‘live AR pornstar’ shows, at least, from the likes of Badoink or Naughty America, within the next 2 or 3 years.
It’s likely that all VR porn will be captured through volumetric techniques eventually. Simple 3D scanning is the end point that would potentially allow anyone with a smartphone to scan themselves and create a 100% realistic digital avatar. VR and AR porn, and the headsets and glasses to experience them through, will likely merge. Already, in fact, you can choose to view the girls of Naughty America Strip Club in a virtual (VR) environment, or your own home.
And between AR and VR porn will lie ‘mixed reality porn’, or ‘merged reality porn’. This is where your own environment becomes virtual. To take an example. If you are viewing a pornstar, whether stereoscopic 3D or ‘holographic/volumetric’, in a virtual environment – that is VR porn. If you view here in your own environment, this is AR porn. However, imagine if the girl climbs on to your bed, and you see the bed realistically crease and depresses, just as it would if a real girl had climbed on to it. That is mixed reality porn.
The lexicon of all these new techs has not yet been established and delineated. For example, you could even separate mixed reality from merged reality (I wont give you headaches by doing so here). Even the umbrella term for them has yet to be agreed. The trend seems to be with XR, although whether that stands for extra reality or extended reality, nobody can agree. Others think ‘immersive’ sounds better (I agree!). Perhaps when Apple do release their AR glasses, they will come up with an entirely new name or acronym that everybody will adopt? One thing that is clear, is that the future of immersive XR porn is very exciting and very close!
