Elon Musk Loosening Moderation on Explicit AI Content?

In tune with his ‘free speech’ stance regarding big tech platforms, Elon Musk has consistently set looser SFW guardrails on his AI services than rivals such as OpenAI, famously launching an Anime AI ‘companion’ earlier this year that was condemned by some moral guardians as obscene and ‘child-like’. In August, his company xAI launched ‘Grok Imagine’, a new AI video generator intended to compete with the likes of Sora and VEO, but which was almost immediately put to use making saucy deepfake videos of Taylor Swift. Now, the Rolling Stone magazine has claimed that horny users of the tool are reporting that it has suddenly become even easier to create NSFW images and videos.

Since its inception, the content on r/GrokNSFWs has grown increasingly graphic as users learn the tricks for circumventing moderation — though at least some of them believe xAI has significantly relaxed those safeguards. “You can basically do anything at this point,” wrote a delighted member of the subreddit. “Wild they are allowing this. Enjoy!” The clip they shared showed a blonde cartoon character resembling Princess Elsa from Disney‘s Frozen films remove a bra and begin performing oral sex on the realistic-looking penis of a male character with no face in the frame. Other videos in the post showed the same character in a variety of sexual positions. The person who generated this content said they had prompted Grok, in part, with this phrase: “Pixar animation style gorgeous super slutty and voluptuous hourglass figure woman with platinum blond braid wearing nothing fully naked relaxed on a couch in a brothel.” An impressed commenter marveled, “I still can’t believe how unhinged the last update was. Not only the nudity but the motions, boobs bounces more realistically, it’s incredible.

As the updated Grok Imagine is still not available in my region, I can’t confirm just how good it is for NSFW video generation, but the /r/GrokNSFWs subreddit is full of impressive and hardcore examples. Although the leading NSFW video generators such as SpicyAI are finally making progress, generating high-quality results with them is very hit and miss and still a long way from the quality of the cutting edge mainstream platforms. For a fan of AI porn, the first thought one has when seeing the stunning examples of next-generation mainstream models such as Sora or VEO 3, is how soon will we see the same quality for AI porn? It seems that NSFW AI video generators are lagging at least a year behind the mainstream tech. Perhaps Grok Imagine is going to change that.

Scrolling through the /r/GrokNSFWs subreddits, and it is clear that not only has the quality of the NSFW videos uploaded over the last month improved manifestly, but that more videos featuring sex acts are among them, ratherthan the often janky ‘breast reveals’ that made up the majority of uploads only a month or so ago. Perhaps it is still too early to say whether this is a deliberate policy shift on the part of xAI, or a lapse in the guardrail algorithms that will be patched soon. However, in August Musk posted on X that he remembers the VHS vs Betamax war in his childhood, and noted (with a winking emoji) that VHS won because they allowed spicy mode.

In the race to AGI and beyond, it’s possible that Elon Musk believes that the old ‘porn is the driver of tech’ adage will see him over the finishing line first. It could well prove to be true, but in the days of VHS, there wasn’t a worldwide mobilized push to roll back porn as there is today. Musk is certainly a polarizing figure, but if he succeeds in ushering in the Singularity with both free speech and the right to use NSFW sex tech preserved and a central part of it, he will go down as the man of the millennium in my eyes.
