‘Holgram’ desktop companions are nothing new. The Japanese company Gatebox first started selling them a decade ago, and even had a customer famously ‘marry’ his 3D anime assistant ‘Azuma Hikari’. However, since then, we haven’t seen too much of these kind of products, at least outside of Japan, although Gatebox did add ChatGPT functionality in 2013. Now though, it appears the tech is ready for prime time, as no less than two companies showcased desktop companions at the CES in Las Vegas earlier this month, while there are at least two other companies developing their own via Kickstarter campaigns.

Razer Project AVA
Razer are a billion+ dollar multi-national company that specializes in computer gaming hardware, so it’s perhaps their attempt to bring a ‘hologram’ desktop companion mainstream that is most notable. Note, however, that the company’s CEO seems reticent to market it as a romantic AI companion; despite choosing an adorable anime girl they call ‘Kira’ as the principle hologram avatar (along with several other male and female avatars the user can select, as well as the Razer logo in a swirling orb).
The hologram stands 5ft 1/2″ tall and can ‘see’ its surroundings, as well as of course hear. I imagine it will have pretty strict guardrails, but how good would it be for something like this to be able to ‘see’ you masturbating, giving you JOI (jerk off instructions) and the like? Even ‘seeing’ you get an erection as it takes off its clothes or performs a sexy dance? Unfortunately, judging from the video and Razer being a mainstream company, the best we can hope for bedroom fun is it telling us off in the mornings for snoring too loudly!
The tech reviewer below claims that it should be possible soon to customize the avatar/companion, which would be rather cool.
The Project AVA companion is likely to ship in the second half of this year, and you can reserve one now at their website.
Lepro Ami – Your AI Soulmate
Chinese company Lepro also showcased a 3D hologram companion at this month’s CES. Unlike Razer, they are not being shy about branding it as an ‘AI soulmate’. Likethe Project AVA hologram, ‘Ami’ can ‘see’, recognize and read your face, track your eye-movement, and even measure your heartbeat. If that all sounds a bit too much, then privacy controls ensure that you can easily cover the camera or microphone with a physical shutter.
The YouTuber above clearly isn’t a man easily impressed by what is still a prototype. If you have faith in the potential of the Lepro Ami, you can register for early bird pricing (if you live in the USA) at their American website.
SyBran Code27 AI Companion
‘Code27‘ from Chinese company SyBran promises to be the most customizable of all the desktop companions that may appear later this year. SyBran hope to build a community which can ‘share’ each other’s character creations and designs and ‘import’ 3D characters from elsewhere. It has advanced conversational abilities and you even allows voice cloning. However, It’s still at the Kickstarter stage.
Dipal D1 AI Character Pod
The Dipal D1, from yet another Chinese company, is very similar to Code27 product, emphasizing the ability to create, select, or import hundreds of thousands of different 3D characters. The D1 hologram companion can track your gaze, read your emotions from the sound of your voice, and even understand hand gestures. Dipal claim it has ‘infinite memory and that you can give it a backstory by feeding it an entire novel.
All this sounds almost too good to be true, and perhaps a word of caution is needed before we end our survey of 3D desktop companions to look out for in 2027. Like Code27, the Dipal D1 is a Kickstarter project. Despite reaching its funding goal in August of last year, it seems that products still aren’t in the hands of early backers. Not only that, it seems the company may have overpromised on what it can deliver, according to their unofficial subreddit. However, the company is promising to start shipping prouducts this month.
Gatebox Still in the Game!
Gatebox, the Japanese company who launched the first 3D holographic desktop companion a decade ago, is still very much in the business. In fact, last year they raised 230 million Japanese Yen (over 1 1/2 million USD) in an investment round. According to the English language Japanese site The Bridge:
Gatebox, which develops products that allow users to live with characters, announced on the 11th that it has raised a total of 230 million yen in a seed round from three companies: PKSHA Algorithm Fund as the lead investor, Incubate Fund, and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Capital.
Gatebox displays AI characters three-dimensionally within a transparent display and, combined with voice recognition technology, provides an experience as if the character were right in front of you. AI characters have emotional expressions and personalities, and can build more natural relationships by remembering conversations and life rhythms with users. The latest version enables conversations on a wide range of topics through integration with ChatGPT.
