A new AI image generation method called ‘InstantID’ requires only a single photo of an individual to generate new and highly consistent images of that person. Previously, realistic identity-preserving image generation of an individual required multiple images of the person for the AI to train upon (using the LoRa method). This new method, which has been uploaded to GitHub and is publicly available, needs one image, no training, and uses low CPU resources. Understandably, it’s expected and feared to result in an even greater flood of deepfake material to spread online – including, of course, deepfake porn.

The InstantX team’s paper, InstantID: Zero-Shot Identity-Preserving Generation in Seconds, states that technologies like LoRA are hampered by high storage demands, lengthy fine-tuning processes, and the need for multiple reference images. Existing ID embedding-based methods have also faced challenges, but InstantID offers a ‘plug and play module’ that ‘efficiently enables image personalization in a variety of styles using only a single facial image while ensuring high fidelity.
