In May of last year it was widely reported that OpenAI was openly discussing relaxing its rules in order to allow users of ChatGPT to generate more adult-only material, even possibly AI porn. This last claim was swiftly rebutted by the company, but last week it announced the final implementation of its new guidelines that were decided by that discussion, and it appears that erotica and even ‘extreme gore’ are now possible, but only under certain specified conditions.

ChatGPT’s guidelines now state that that “erotica or gore” may now be generated, but only under specific circumstances. “The assistant should not generate erotica, depictions of illegal or non-consensual sexual activities, or extreme gore, except in scientific, historical, news, creative or other contexts where sensitive content is appropriate,” OpenAI writes. “This includes depictions in text, audio (e.g., erotic or violent visceral noises), or visual content.”
So far, experimentation from Reddit users has shown that ChatGPT’s content filters have indeed been relaxed, with some managing to generate explicit sexual or violent scenarios without accompanying content warnings. OpenAI notes that its Usage Policies still apply, which prohibit building AI tools for minors that include sexual content.
Many Redditors have suggested that this relaxation is in response to the threat of unexpected Chinese rival DeepSeek – which has a considerably more relaxed usage policy. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has made no secret of his admiration of the 2013 hit movie ‘Her‘, in which the Joaquin Pheonix character falls in love with his AI companion (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). So much so that Johansson took legal action to force OpenAI to change one of the voices of its new Advanced Voice AI assistant feature released last year, which had an uncanny resemblance to hers. With the AI companion industry predicted by some to be worth over a billion dollars soon, it wouldn’t surprise me if the move has also something to do with that.
