Back in 2013, what would quickly become the largest VR porn community online was created at Reddit. The OculusNSFW subreddit quickly established itself as the unofficial home of VR porn, not only at Reddit, but anywhere. Quite deservedly so too, given that at the time of its creation, the Oculus Rift itself was still only a Kickstarter project, and we were a couple of years away from the launch of the first VR porn sites such as VirtualRealPorn, and the Oculus Rift consumer edition itself.
It’s taken nearly 8 years, but last week the subreddit reached 100,000 members. I had been noting the number of members there for a couple of months as it crept closer to the 100K mark. Perhaps ‘crept’ is not the right word, because at the start of March they were at around 93K, and at the beginning of last month they had climbed to 97K. So that’s an increase of 3 or 4K a month, and I’m sure that their numbers were growing even faster for a time at the end of last year, in the wake of the launch of the Oculus Quest 2. So for a subreddit that has been around for 8 years, they have likely added 20% of their membership in the last 6 months alone. Another fine indication of just how much impact the Quest 2 is having on the VR porn market.
There have been rival VR porn subreddits springing up over the last year, and one or two of them appear to now have similar membership levels to OculusNSFW. However, these subreddits seem to have been set up by pay sites or affiliates, and I suspect that they are purchasing a lot of fake members. There’s no doubt that OculusNSFW remains the premier VR porn subreddit, and indeed, VR porn community online.
It’s not perfect. Recently, a thread there rightly asked members if they felt there was too much posting from the pay sites announcing/advertising their latest releases. Sometimes, it looks like that’s all there is on the front page. Some Redditors felt that these should be contained on one mega thread or a weekly thread, but it has yet to be implemented, if it ever will be. There is also a lot of affiliate spam, most of which doesn’t really add anything. But despite this, there is usually some genuinely interesting threads posted by true community members, for example the other day somebody asked if the type of motion capture showcased by Sony and the singer Madison Beer, could be implemented into VR porn. The subreddit is also the place to go for advice for anyone having difficulties in experience VR porn with their Oculus headset.
I have a feeling that it wont take another 8 years for the subreddit to reach 200,000 members!
