AI gooners are going to have to wait a little longer to create naughty stuff on ChatGPT. The company have for a second time officially delayed the launch of their “adult mode” feature that would allow paid subscribers to overcome guardrails and be “treated as adults”. Sam Altman originally promised that it would arrive before the end of last year, but then pushed it back to “the first quarter of 2026”. Now getting deep into March, the company has admitted that it will be some time yet before ChatGPT porn becomes a thing.
OpenAI is presently under fire for swiftly moving to take the place of Anthropic in signing a contract with the US military. At the same time, they have been repeatedly trying to defend against the common perception that they are under financial pressure and even close to going bust. On top of this, porn itself, and in particular AI porn is under the cosh, especially after the damaging Grok scandal which involved multiple users on X successfully asking the chatbot to create deepfake intimate images of celebrities.
An OpenAI spokesperson told Axios that the company was”“pushing out the launch of adult mode” in order to “focus on work that is a higher priority for more users right now,” such as work on aspects like intelligence, personality, and making the chatbot “more proactive. We still believe in the principle of treating adults like adults, but getting the experience right will take more time.”
It’s not known exactly what kind of erotic materials will be allowed when “adult mode” finally does arrive, but especially after the Grok scandal, it would be surprising if it was anything more x-rated than Grok’s “spicy mode”, together with romantic AI companions.
