OpenAI Policy Exec was Fired after Opposing AI Erotica

A story has recently come to light that might show just how serious OpenAI is about allowing erotic content. Ryan Beiermeister, a former vice president at OpenAI leading the product policy team, was fired in early January 2026 amid allegations of sexual discrimination against a male colleague—claims she has strongly denied. Now it has emerged that her termination came shortly after she had voiced opposition to the  move by OpenAI to allow an “adult mode” (still expected to take place before April). This promised adult feature for ChatGPT would enable users to generate erotic content and engage in adult-themed conversations. OpenAI has insisted that her departure was unrelated to the concerns she raised about the feature but many are sceptical.

ChatGPT adult mode concern

Beiermeister joined OpenAI in mid-2024 as part of a group of hires from Meta Platforms, with the goal of influencing tech companies’ ethical practices from within. In her role as VP of Product Policy, she oversaw the development of usage rules for OpenAI’s products and designed enforcement mechanisms. She also initiated a peer-mentorship program for women at the company in early 2025, aimed at fostering career discussions in small groups. Prior to her firing, she had been on a leave of absence. In response to the allegations, Beiermeister stated, “The allegation that I discriminated against anyone is absolutely false.”

OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman rather bashfully revealed the move to allow “erotica” in a Tweet posted back in October. Initially promised for December, it was soon pushed back to the first quarter of this year as the company struggled to ensure that minors would not be able to access the feature. The recent huge backlash against the use of Grok to create deepfake erotic images and even sexual depictions of minors has likely only increased the need to put sufficient guardrails in place. However, the adult mode is still expected in the next couple of months, and the departure of Ryan Beiermeister is a sign – despite OpenAI’s unconvincing denials – that they are now committed to making it happen.

OpenAI is locked into an increasingly desperate and cutthroat race to profitability with Google’s Gemini and xAI’s Grok, the latter of which has looser restrictions on sexual content and saw paid subscriptions rocket after introducing the sexy AI waifu companion “Ani” last year. Whilst allowing NSFW image and video generation, as well as spicy AI chat, both carry risks, it’s likely that any of the major AI chatbot companies that do not allow erotica will ultimately lose out to their rivals.
