Somnia Lab is a startup focused exclusively on what it calls “intimacy robotics”. Whilst most “sex robot” companies are squarely pitching their humanoid robots as “companions”, Somnia Lab are rather more open and up-front about the fact that men will want to bang these things. For example, they have released numerous video clips on social media of human employees engaging in sexual motions in order to provide motion capture training data for their humanoids. What they are promising is not simply a smart sex doll that can have a conversation with you, nor even submissively lie back and let you bang it. The idea is to achieve “biofidelity” in the form of a realistic female humanoid that not only feels human to the touch, but can sense your touch and physically respond to it.
Across her breasts, hips, and vagina, touch sensors register where your hand lands and how much pressure you apply. Location and intensity become part of what happens next.
She looks at you through two eyes. When she speaks, her voice comes from inside her body. The gaze you meet and the voice you hear remain anchored to the body in front of you.
Meet resistance and she yields. She does not hold a rigid line through your body or wait for you to move around her. Pressure changes how she settles, so the position forms around both of you.
The same position does not feel the same with every person. She adapts to the body actually there, settling differently instead of asking everyone to fit one fixed shape.
It all sounds exciting, but before you get carried away, it’s sobering to note that there is very little in the way of product demonstration at this point other than a few photos on their homepage and a promise that pre-orders will be available soon. We’ve seen this many time before of course with sex robot companies that promised much and never delivered, but at least there were some demonstrations of a real product from the likes of “Roxxxy” True Companion from Douglas Hines, or “Samantha” from Sergi Santos. Whether Somnia Lab is merely running a vaporware campaign remains to be seen, but other red flags raise concerns, such as the fact that no CEO or even employees are anywhere to be found on their website. The company is officially listed as based in Los Angeles, California, though multiple industry reports flag ties to Shenzhen, China — including the motion-capture technology used in their viral August 2026 video originating from Chinese sources. If the company is Chinese, as it appears, then it is unclear what impact the recent AI companion regulations introduced there will have on a product explicitly marketed as a sex robot, and that also has a “sleep companion mode” — which allows you to share your bed with it every night.
Somnia Lab are calling their first product the Model L intimacy robot. Whilst the head has up to 37 degrees of freedom, and the body up to 52, the robots cannot walk and nor do they have dexterous hands. The company have stated that these are not necessary for bedroom intimacy and merely bloat the cost. Instead, they have focused on stationary intimacy. The Model L will come in four different versions, each more expensive and with more advanced features. For example, the basic model has no facial expressions and the body has 20 DoF, whereas the most advanced “Founder” edition has 12 facial expressions and 52 DoF.
