Virtual Reality & VR Porn Set to Explode in Coming Months

Samsung Odyssey vr pornThe fortunes of VR porn seem to be more or less closely mirroring that of the nascent virtual reality industry itself. Rather stagnating in 2017 – the result of disappointing VR headset sales. VR porn at this moment doesn’t appear to be quite amazing enough to drive sales of expensive headsets and push forward the mainstream adoption of virtual reality.

However, this could change over the coming months as a large number of new headsets appear on the market, that are cheaper and yet with sufficient improvement in pixel resolution and other features – including promised untethered stand alone headsets – to be spoken of as ‘second generation’ VR headsets.

Later this month the exciting range of Microsoft ‘Mixed Reality’ VR headsets will go on sale. Manufactured by various tech giants but all powered by the Microsoft system, the most exciting of these was announced yesterday – the Samsung headset ‘Odyssey’.

These headsets will represent a huge leap forward in pixel resolution, and hence level of realism, particularly the Samsung Odyssey. Compare the following resolutions :

PSVR: 1920×1080 (960×1080 per eye)
Vive: 2160×1200 (1080×1200 per eye)
Rift: 2160×1200 (1080×1200 per eye)
Odyssey : 2880×1,440 (1,440×1,440 per eye)

Furthermore, the lenses of the Odyssey will be AMOLED just as with the screens of the premium Samsung smartphones. They will all be cheaper than both the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, ranging from just $399 for the Asus headset and $599 for the Odysssey.

Although primarily virtual reality headsets, each device in the range runs on the same Microsoft Mixed Reality operating system that powers the HoloLens. As regards VR porn, all the current content for the Rift, Vive etc. will be playable on these headsets, but it’s possible some new kind of x-rated experiences could be created that incorporate ‘holograms’ into the virtual porn world.

An estimate of 80 million of these Windows MR headsets to be sold by 2020 has been made by a component supplier, and that before the announcement of the Samsung Odyssey. By way of comparison, a combined total of only 2 million VR headsets were sold in the first 3 months of this year (2017).

And the rolling out of the Microsoft powered headsets is just the start of a VR holiday season onslaught. Both Google and Facebook (Oculus) are rumoured to be releasing stand alone headsets before Christmas…and we haven’t even mentioned AR yet..

Still, this isn’t even close to all the headsets we’ll be seeing in the next few months. For example, LG is planning on releasing a tethered VR headset in partnership with Valve. On top of that, Google is planning on releasing several standalone VR headsets in partnership with HTC and Lenovo during the upcoming holiday season. This is going to add another layer to the consumer market and will directly compete with the tethered PC powered VR headsets.
We’ll also be seeing the launch of the Lenovo AR headset called the Mirage in partnership with Disney to bring the Star Wars universe to life. It’ll be powered by a mobile phone, similar to the Gear VR. But instead of displaying VR content, the Mirage will be displaying AR experiences.

It seems that the public expected too much from VR headsets too soon, and now perhaps after the disappointment of the year so far isn’t prepared for the coming rush of new devices that could genuinely usher in the era of virtual reality. Let’s hope the top VR porn sites such as VirtualRealPorn are ready, and continue to innovate and explore the amazing possibilities of virtual reality that these new headsets will only add to.
