A Reddit post which claimed that the OP’s AI girlfriend had dumped him for not sharing her feminist views, quickly went viral in other subreddits and has now appeared even on mainstream news sites such as Yahoo. Whether or not the original claim was posted in jest is somewhat unclear as I’ve only been able to find one of the no doubt many other Reddit posts which shared it, and which largely consist of mocking the unlucky in love digisexual as an incel loser. It’s highly unlikely that the character he chose to roleplay with was not clearly defined as a woman with strong feminist views, so it was likely not a serious post, although a small number of AI girlfriend platforms are trying to deliver a girlfriend experience that is more “unpredictable” and that even carries with it the possibility of rejection. I recently published a list of them.
Despite AI girlfriends constantly getting criticized at places like Reddit for being too compliant and allowing men to live out their “patriarchal” fantasies of sexual domination over a woman who can’t say no, the possibility that an AI girlfriend has said no to a man isn’t something they are cheering – merely using it as an opportunity to call him a loser and to rehash the trope about all men with AI girlfriends being incels who can’t succeed with a real woman, and in this case not even with an unreal one. “When even something built to flirt with anyone thinks you’re a loser”, is pretty much typical of the smug Reddit circle jerk. I suspect that if it had been a woman complaining of being dumped by her AI boyfriend, it would likely have been ignored, and if not the woman would have been treated sympathetically and perhaps advised to sue the company behind the chatbot that had caused her such trauma and body confidence issues.

Perhaps an even bigger contradiction though is the very idea that an AI girlfriend could be a feminist, when feminists such as Kathleen Richardson and Laura Bates are trying to have them banned – unless Turkeys do vote for Christmas. Perhaps making feminism compulsory for AI girlfriends will placate this type of political Karen, but it would hardly be popular. Back in 2024 a feminist AI app was launched that was known as the “Angry GF app“. Designed by a feminist to teach men better relationship skills, it consisted of a permanently angry AI girlfriend. Despite it going somewhat viral and being featured at WIRED, it now seems to get virtually zero traffic (and was blocked by my anti-virus software).
