My Review of the Lovense Max 2

Leading high-tech sex toy brand Lovense very kindly sent me a “Max 2” earlier this year, and after having had quite some use (and fun!) with it, it’s time now for me to give my honest appraisement. If you can’t wait to read my final verdict, I will say right now that it’s probably the best value interactive masturbator I’ve tried. It provides uniquely pleasurable sensations due to its quite novel 360 degree air-pump tech combined with a powerful internal vibrator, all with the possibility of being synced with VR porn, remote lovers, games, and even music.  Yes, it does have a couple of drawbacks-the chief of which are that it is a little noisy (though not nearly as much as I had feared after reading some other reviews) and can be a “tight fit” and might even difficult to “get inside” for a few, However, as you will see if you continue reading, I have some workarounds for those issues if you think they might be a problem for you.

An Introduction to Lovense and the Max 2

Singapore based company Lovense have been pioneering teledildonics and remote sex toys since 2009. Indeed, founder Dan Liu was apparently motivated to start the company after being in a long-distance relationship and frustrated by the inability to have physical sex with his partner. As early as 2011, Lovense introduced the world’s first remote sex toys for LDR couples, with male owners of the “iMan” able to remotely pleasure female owners of the “iLady”. In 2013 the company launched an app-based remote control male masturbator (the original Max), alongside the remote rabbit vibrator Nora. The two toys could work together over Bluetooth and the Lovense phone app. Since then, Lovense have introduced a number of remote sex toys that can also sync with porn videos (including VR porn), as well as live webcam girls. Late last year they introduced AI companions that can operate a user’s sex toy, and at January’s CES they showcased “Emily”, an AI companion doll.

The Max 2 sets itself apart from rivals in that whilst most premium and interactive male masturbators focus on perfecting the automated stroke, the Max 2 features a unique combination of 360-degree air-pump contractions and a powerful, redesigned internal vibrator. Instead of moving up and down, the Max 2 focuses on creating sensations within its textured sleeve. The internal air pump inflates and deflates, simulating the feeling of tightening and squeezing, while a separate motor provides intense vibrations. These two functions can be controlled independently or used in concert through the Lovense Remote app-widely regarded as the best remote sex toy apps there is. This app enables:

  • Solo Play: Manual control and access to a near-infinite library of user-created patterns.
  • Interactive Content: Syncing with 2D and VR adult videos, as well as interactive games.
  • Long-Distance Play: Connecting with a partner’s Lovense toy for a shared, real-time experience.

Unboxing and Connecting to the App

The Max 2 was delivered to me (in Europe) just a couple of days after I was promised it by Lovense, in simple, discreet packaging. I wasted no time in unboxing to reveal the toy itself, a charger, and a very basic user guide. The charger should work with all Lovense toys, but probably not with other brands. The charger “docks” magnetically with the base of the toy, rather than inserting it into it. I did find this to be a minor issue, as it means you cannot stand the top upright whilst charging it. This is an issue because when lying the toy on a flat surface it can roll and fall off. However, it just requires a bit of care to avoid this. The user guide is very simple and covers not much more than diagrams indicating how to turn it on and off, how to clean it, and how to connect to the Lovense app.

One thing that did initially strike me was how heavy the Max 2 is. It’s not so heavy that a hands free mount is required, but holding it for 30 minutes whilst standing, sitting, or lying on your back might result in a bit of arm weariness. The case is, however, very easy and comfortable to grip. Furthermore, you really need to only hold the phone briefly, to create a pattern which can then be ‘looped’, select a pre-recorded pattern. You can even control the toy with your voice via the app, or even set it to respond to music. And, of course, there is the possibility to sync it with video or games.

For users without a phone or app, or who just have some odd desire to use it as a simple automatic male masturbator, there are two manual buttons on the toy-one to switch it on (and which then also controls the intensity of the vibration), and another next to it that turns on and controls the contractions. However, the Max 2 really does become a high-tech sex toy when it is paired with the wonderful Lovense App on your smartphone. The heaviness of the Max 2 would be more of an issue if you had to hold the smartphone in your other hand, but operating the toy with the app has been intelligently designed so you can just lie it down next to you and simply slide various controls with your fingers. Once you get going, you don’t really need to touch your phone much at all, with the ability to choose from saved patterns or to put your initial patterns on “loop” or “float”.

Once I got inside, and I started playing around with the contractions and vibrations, there wasn’t any question of me going limp again until I’d climaxed, that much was sure. I should say that I am more of a “stroker” person than a “vibration simulation” fan when it comes to masturbators. Only a few non-stroking automatic masturbators have done it for me, and one of them was the Tenga Flip Hole. The Lovense Max 2 feels in some ways like a more advanced version of that toy, and the sublime sensations are very familiar.  And whilst the Max 2 isn’t billed as a “blowjob machine” and has no stroking function as such, I found the rhythmic contractions were strong enough to create a very realistic and highly pleasing sucking sensation.  As some other reviewers have  noted, the vibrations are not the most intense out there, but they are pleasing, and certainly complement the contractions. In summary, together with the easy to use app, I found that the combination of patterns and contractions were highly satisfying, as well as extremely versatile.

The “Noise Issue”

There is now way that a fair and balanced review of the Lovense Max 2 can avoid addressing the “noise problem”, so let’s confront it head on. In all honesty, having seen the noise described as an issue in multiple Reddit threads and reviews on YouTube and elsewhere, I was expecting something a lot worse. It has been estimated as being in the 50-70db-comparable to a vacuum cleaner. The culprit is not the vibrations but the air-pump contraction system. It is fairly loud and, moreover, the sound the contractions make do rather give the game away that you are using a sex toy rather than, say, a vacuum cleaner or a razor. However, it’s not as if it’s lound enough that it would set the neighbours gossiping, unless you have very thin walls. It might be an issue in a hotel room, for example. For those considering the Max 2 as a travel companion, I should also note that one reviewer has mentioned that it triggered the airport security scan two times out of two when he took it on flights with him.

Workarounds for the Noise Issue

1. Mask the sound with background noise

  • Run a fan, air purifier, or white noise machine — this is one of the most effective and simple methods. A steady fan hum easily covers moderate mechanical noise.
  • Play music, a TV show, podcast, or YouTube video at a reasonable volume (something with consistent sound, not total silence between tracks).
  • Time sessions for when your neighbor is likely making their own noise (shower running, music/TV on their side, cooking, etc.).

2. Muffle the toy itself

  • Wrap the Max 2 in a thick towel, blanket, or hoodie while in use. Many users report this noticeably quiets it down (especially the air pump clicks and motor hum) without killing too much sensation — just keep the open end accessible.
  • Place it on/inside a pile of pillows, under a heavy comforter, or between your body and the mattress/blankets. The soft materials absorb vibration-borne sound very well.
  • Use it in positions where your body naturally dampens it (e.g., lying on your stomach or side, pressing it against the bed).

3. Adjust settings for lower noise

  • Turn contractions off or keep them very low — this eliminates most of the distinctive pumping/whirring sounds that travel through walls. The vibration motor alone is noticeably quieter for many people.
  • Stick to low-to-medium vibration levels — high settings get buzzier and louder.
  • Use slower, steadier patterns in the app instead of rapid pulsing, which can amplify mechanical noise.

4. Change location / timing

  • Use it in the bathroom with the shower or fan running — water noise is excellent camouflage, and any small drips won’t matter.
  • Do sessions when your neighbor is out, asleep, or when ambient building noise is higher (traffic, evening hours, appliances running).
  • If possible, position yourself farther from the shared wall (e.g., opposite side of the room or bed).

5. Other small tweaks

  • Make sure the toy is fully charged — low battery can sometimes make motors noisier.
  • Avoid letting the hard case rattle against hard surfaces (bed frame, nightstand) — soft surfaces only.

Most people in apartments manage with a combination of white noise + blanket muffling + lower contractions — it won’t make the Max 2 silent, but it usually drops the sound enough that it blends into normal room noise rather than standing out as “obvious sex toy sounds.”

Syncing the Max 2 with VR Porn

Many of you will be considering this as your VR porn toy and will want to know above all else, how it performs syncing to VR porn movies. The answer is very well. The Max 2 is one of the most popular options for use with VR porn scripts, and is well supported by the top studios. I found connecting the toy to VirtualRealPorn videos was a breeze, and once the video started streaming the haptic feedback seemed real and immersive, matching the action with little or no jarring moments and with zero latency. Used with VR porn, and the Max 2 suddenly becomes something more than a high-tech sex toy, enabling virtual sex with your favorite pornstars.

How to Sync with a VR Porn Video

The primary method for connection involves using a VR headset (like a Meta Quest 2 or 3) and the DeoVR media player, with the setup process being fairly straightforward.

  • Power on the Lovense Max 2 to activate its Bluetooth.
  • Launch the DeoVR app on your headset.
  • Navigate to a compatible content site, such as VirtualRealPorn, within the DeoVR browser.
  • In the player or site settings, scan for Bluetooth devices.
  • The Max 2 should appear and connect.
  • Play a video with an associated interactive script.

Lovense Max 2: Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
  • Air-pump contractions are exquisite and complemented by a decent vibrator.
  • Endless variety with insanely inventive and easy to use Lovense App.
  • Works well with VR porn – supported by most of the top sites and studios.
  • Exceptional value for money.
  • Noise is an issue for many, but not a deal breaker for most and there are workarounds.
  • If you have a larger girth, it will feel very tight and you will need to buy the alternative sleeve.

Conclusion – The Best Value Interactive Male Sex Toy at this Price

For a toy that retails at around $100, the Max 2 is a high-tech wonder that can do pretty much anything paired with the Lovense smartphone app. If you’re looking for an interactive male masturbator at under $150 that syncs with and delivers incredible sensations for porn and VR porn especially, then this is as close to a must buy as you can get. There are several caveats though. Firstly, be aware that it’s not a typical automatic stroker and relies on a unique 360-degree air-pump system. Secondly, it can be a bit noisy and “revealing”, so if you are paranoid about discreetness and have paper thin walls then it might not be for you. Thirdly, those with above average girth will find it a little tight, although there is an alternative sleeve you can purchase that will solve that issue.
