Top ranked virtual reality porn site VirtualTaboo has begun to release videos in 7K resolution, which they proudly claim is their ‘new quality standard’. It’s certainly a big jump up from the standards of nearly all of their rivals, who shoot mainly in 5K, with the notable exception of VRBangers which for a long time has proudly held the title of the ‘World’s First 6K VR Porn Site’ (and more recently VRConk, which appears now to have been bought by the former).
I’ll admit that I’m not an expert in things like screen resolutions and their effectiveness in VR headsets, but I’ve been trying to ascertain which of the leading VR headsets will be able to play 7K videos. In VR, screen resolution is a little more complicated than on a normal screen such as a smartphone or a television. To start with, a virtual reality headset has two screens, one for each eye. It seems the norm now is to give the resolution for each eye, although if I remember correctly, that wasn’t always the case in earlier days. Another factor to consider is the FOV (Field Of View) of both the headset and the video. Then there are questions of frame rate, bitrate, and whether the headset even has the software to correctly interpret the 7K resolution.
Nonetheless, it’s a welcome progression. Resolution is far more important for VR porn than 2D porn, because any noticeable pixelation, even if it’s perhaps sub-consciously perceived, will create a screen door effect, and shatter any illusion that you are in the ‘virtual’ reality, rather than watching a video. I also recall reading somewhere that it will take 8K resolution or more to completely remove this pixelation/screen door effect.
Leaving aside the issue of which current headsets can benefit from 7K VR porn, VirtualTaboo are certainly going some way to future-proofing their new content, something that might pay off in the years ahead. Most of the top sites now have hundreds of VR porn videos in their archives, but most of their early releases even now look very pixelated and dated in a high-end VR headset. The first VR porn site – VirtualRealPorn – began by filming in 3K. Last year, they began re-making some of their early classics in 5K, using the same actresses. Unfortunately, while the technology had improved, the girls arguably hadn’t (something only made more noticeable by the increased resolution). Other sites have simply tried ‘upscaling‘ their old videos to a higher resolution, something that usually isn’t wholly effective.
