XREAL say that no extra hardware or app is required, with the realtime 2D to 3D video conversion handled by the company’s X1 spatial computing chipset built into the One series glasses. This will come as a relief to many owners, as having bought a pair of XREAL Pro One glasses last year primarily to view AR content on it, I was disappointed to find that I had to fork out extra for the “XREAL Eye” to enable six degrees of freedom (6DoF). You also need to buy seperately the XREAL Beam, which acts as a kind of remote control.
Converting 2D video to 3D in realtime is an impressive feat of technology. The company told RoadToVR that the glasses can do it because the X1 spatial computing chip has a special NPU (neural processing unit) which can provide a depth estimation inference on every incoming frame and then generate the required left and right views to create the 3D depth image.
