The woman who created a viral storm last week, by launching an AI chat version of herself to be your ‘virtual girlfriend’, has claimed that she has been receiving a barrage of death threats online – all of which she has reported to the FBI. Caryn Marjorie, who is a Snapchat influencer with almost 2 million followers, had over a thousand men sign up to be her virtual boyfriend almost immediately upon launching her service (still in ‘early access’), which costs $1 a minute. She claims to have made over $70,000 already, and expects to be making $5 million a month quite soon. For that to happen, only 20,000 of her 1.8 million followers need to pay to get digitally intimate with her. It is not known precisely why Caryn is attracting so much anger and hate, but she Tweeted that her death threats came from people who ‘are against AI’.
With the figures quoted above, it doesn’t take a genius to guess the reason why CarynAI is likely provoking such a backlash. As I predicted years ago, the digitization of sex and relationships is going to transform the dating market. The launch of CarynAI may prove to be the most significant moment in that process. Suddenly, thanks to AI, one woman can (virtually) date an almost infinite number of men simultaneously. While previously digitization had largely tipped the balance of sexual power towards women and away from most men (think of the majority of females on Tinder swiping right for the 10% or so of most attractive men), we are now entering a quite different age. If you thought that women having easy access to sex with 10% of males via apps like Tinder was causing social dislocation in the form of creating male incels, just think of what might happen when every man can date any one of the 1,000 or so hottest women on the planet?
Of course, the same might be said of women. After all, women will soon be able to virtually date what the incels call ‘GigaChads‘, potentially creating even more male incels. But I suspect that virtual AI dating will be far more popular among men, just as porn is, and just as sex robots are, than it is for women – at least for some time. Those claiming that AI girls will never replace the real thing for men, may have a point when insisting that most men will require some psychological element and connection to ditch flesh and blood girls for digital subsitutes. But there’s equally no doubt in my mind that the threshold for being so psychologically satisfied is lower for men than it is for women. And AI girls like CarynAI, based upon real individuals, will probably pass that threshold, particularly as they become more advanced, and come with photorealistic avatars that you can interact with (even physically) in virtual and augmented reality.
The company behind CarynAI is ‘Forever Voices’, run by CEO John Meyer, and which already had a history of recreating not only the personalities of celebrities, but also of recently deceased individuals in order that their grieving relatives, who paid for the service, can continue to speak to them. Meyer says that CarynAI is only the first in a new line of AI girlfriends based on influencers, called ‘Forever Companion’.
Working with deepfake startup Forever Voices, the 23-year old founder said she spent thousands of hours training her AI chatbot to talk and act like her off deleted YouTube videos.
“i have uploaded over 2,000 hours of my content, voice, and personality to become the first creator to be turned into an AI, now millions of people will be able to talk to me at the same exact time,” Marjorie tweeted.
Users can pre-pay any amount via ApplePay, GooglePay or debit card and then are billed a dollar a minute to interact with her chatbot, Forever Voices founder John Meyer told me. Profit is split between Forever Voices and the creator.
While CarynAI has already recevied death threats from a few online crazies, the mainstream media which picked up with this story and published it in numerous outlets, hasn’t really processed yet what it all might mean. But as such ‘datebots’ based upon real celebrities and influencers begin to quickly proliferate, we can no doubt expect some hysteria and moral panics to be generated in their wake. And no doubt legislators and lobbyists will soon have ammunition for their cause, as what is to stop the personalities of female celebrities or even ordinary women being ‘deepfaked’ for dating and sexual purposes, just as their images can be used for deepfake porn? As mentioned, the company behind CarynAI has already recreated AI personalities of individuals such as Kayne West without their approval. No doubt, any unathorized use of a celebrity as a virtual boyfriend or girlfriend like CarynAI would result in legal action against a company such as Forever Voices. But just as there are deepfake porn forums that host images of celebrities, no doubt they will soon be hosting their personalities too.
