The Main Porn And Sex Tech Trends In 2023
2023 will go down as a landmark year in which artificial intelligence first started to make a huge impact upon adult entertainment. Although AI deepfake porn had been around for several years, and people had already started using Stable Diffusion to create NSFW AI images in 2022, it was this year in which a plethora of simple-to-use AI porn generators appeared online (most of them being cloned versions of Stable Diffusion, which had banned NSFW image generation in an update late last year).
Similarly, AI chatbot companions are not new, but in 2023 they became supercharged with ultra-natural conversational abilities, including voice chat, as well as the ability to send realistic and consistent sexy selfies. And because the LLM (large language model) behind chatbots became open source, we saw the number of AI girlfriends increase almost exponentially. What was completely new in 2023 was the rise of AI influencers, such as CarynAI. AI girlfriends were no longer just fictional, but also sometimes based upon real people, thereby introducing an element of ‘real psychology’ into the botsexual relationship. It also enabled fading pornstars to resurrect their careers as AI versions of themselves. However, later in the year, several AI influencers built followings that were not based upon an actual person at all, perhaps confirming viral predictions made at the start of 2023 that “it’s over for OnlyFans”.
A third key development that AI made possible was the simple synching between adult videos and haptic sex toys. Whilst previously, ‘scripts’ had to be manually written to synch the actions of the toy with the video, new male masturbators such as the Syncbot can analyze a video and create the script within seconds.
The other big NSFW tech development in 2023 was the rise of passthrough porn (or mixed reality porn). Some even call this augmented reality porn, although the passthrough porn that has become popular with the launch of the Meta Quest 3 is simply VR porn videos with no background, for viewing in passthrough/mixed reality mode. The actress thus appears to be in your actual environment, sucking and fucking you on your sofa or bed. However, they are simply in stereoscopic 3D VR, so do not appear as ‘holograms’ that you can move around. ‘Hologram’ or ‘volumetric’ augmented reality continued to advance, with games like VR-Hot becoming popular on the Quest 3. However, it will probably require volumetric or 3D scanning to become cheaper and easier before it really takes off. There is hope that this will happen though with the news that the forthcoming Apple Reality headset will have a 3D ‘spatial’ camera built into it. Admittedly, that headset will be wildly expensive, at least for consumers, but potentially the camera tech will be included in future cheaper versions, and other VR/AR headsets.
JANUARY – Passthrough Porn And BBW VR Porn Fans
Back in January, it was already becoming apparent that passthrough porn was a growing niche when studio AmoreVR became the second, after SLR Originals, to film passthrough videos. While the world was on the brink of a revolution in AI girlfriend technology, tens of thousands of men and women who had formed a virtual relationship with the pioneering Replika were left heartbroken, after a change in Italian regulations forced the company behind it to neuter her love making algorithms. And in the meantime, both Soulgen and DeepSwap can do it increasingly well for VR porn videos (although it really only works when the actress is looking directly at the camera/you, and is quite close (i.e. missionary or cowgirl).
VR Bangers released the first 12K VR porn movie, although skepticism was plentiful, with many considering it another marketing trick from the studio. There were doubts as to whether it was actually filmed in 12K rather than upscaled, and since the release, VR Bangers has only released one further 12K video.
In exciting news for augmented reality porn fans, a new site was launched. 3DUncut.com featured volumetrically scanned pornstars in sexy animations that were on a par with those of existing rival Naughty America’s.
The emergence of AI porn, and its potential to upend the adult image industry, featured in headlines again when it was claimed that AI-generated fake nudes were already being sold to unsuspecting simps as real pictures, on Reddit and elsewhere. At the same time I highlighted the fact that Google search interest in AI porn had already almost surpassed that of VR porn. In the same month, I correctly predicted a flood of AI girlfriend sites and apps after an open source LLM had been released and infused with ChatGPT. Other AI stories included a guide to spotting an AI girl from a real girl, speculation that Pornhub would become an entirely AI-generated porn site, and an apparent (short-lived) porn ban on the .ai domain extension.

MAY – The Rise Of The AI Influencer, And The First Crude AI Porn Video Generators
The first AI influencer was announced in the form of CarynAI – a cloned version of Snapchat celebrity Caryn Marjorie. Not everybody was happy though, and only days later, Caryn (the real one) was claiming that she had been the victim of death threats. Death threats or not, the rise of the AI influencer was unstoppable. CarynAI was quickly followed by AmouranthAI (technically she may have been the first). The founder of the Forever Companion, the company that launched both AI influencers, was recently arrested over arson, as well as for making terrorist threats, after an apparent mental health collapse.
I tested the world’s first AI porn video generator. A rival site (Pornify) claims that theirs was actually the first. In any case, whatever the porn tech history books ultimately say, both video generators were rather crude, and more like gifs than true videos. This remains the case today over six months later, as with all current attempts at AI porn video generation. There is, however, still a lot of hope we might see true AI porn video generators in 2024. My post, btw, was one of my most ‘viral’ of the year, receiving over 12,000 views as of today.
Whilst most of the NSFW AI generators thus far had been the work of independent developers and startups with no connection to the adult industry, this was different with DeepFake.com. This was a new style Generator launched by industry veteran Steve Lightspeed, famous for his ‘Lightspeed Girl’s of the 2000’s which included the likes of Tawnee Stone and Jordan Capri. Well, Lightspeed used all of that content (which he still has the license for) as the dataset to train his AI model upon. The outcome was a NSFW image generator that produced a unique style of results, and also may (arguably) be a little more future-proof in terms of legal challenges down the road.
